Amit Shah Inaugurates ₹128-Crore Madhur Dairy Plant, Strengthening Cooperative Dairy Growth in Gujarat

Union Cooperation Minister Amit Shah inaugurates Madhur Dairy’s fully automated Unit-2 in Gandhinagar, targeting a daily processing surge of up to 500,000 liters.

The cooperative processing framework of India’s primary milkshed has received a major technological upgrade with the formal commissioning of a high-capacity manufacturing node in Western India. Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah officially inaugurated Madhur Dairy’s brand-new, fully automated Unit-2 milk processing and packaging plant at Dashela village in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. Constructed with an initial capital investment of ₹128 crore (approximately €14.3 million), the state-of-the-art facility spans over 15 acres of land and features an initial intake capacity of 2.5 lakh (250,000) liters of liquid milk per day, with built-in engineering provisions to expand maximum daily processing volumes to 5 lakh (500,000) liters to handle future production surges.

From an economic standpoint, the new facility introduces a highly progressive wealth-redistribution model specifically designed to insulate primary smallholders from market volatility. Under the operational guidelines outlined during the inauguration, nearly 75 percent of the net profits remaining after accounting for baseline operational expenses will be directly transferred into the individual bank accounts of local livestock farmers. This direct capital pipeline is structurally engineered to maximize farmgate value realization, eliminate intermediate procurement leakages, and significantly elevate the baseline rural standard of living across the Gandhinagar district.

The commissioning of Unit-2 underscores the exceptional long-term growth trajectory of Madhur Dairy, which is strategically affiliated with the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF) under the world-renowned Amul brand. Originally established in 1971 with just four localized cooperative societies handling a meager 6,000 liters of raw milk daily, the cooperative union has scaled its operations exponentially over the past five decades. Today, the dairy manages an average daily procurement of approximately 2.76 lakh liters of liquid milk, transforming its early token revenue into a massive multi-crore annual turnover that anchors the regional agricultural economy.

During his keynote address, Minister Shah highlighted the domestic dairy sector as a primary instrument for grassroots women’s empowerment and economic independence throughout rural Gujarat. The state’s highly integrated cooperative grid currently collects roughly 3 crore (30 million) liters of milk daily from over 36 lakh (3.6 million) active female livestock farmers, resulting in an estimated ₹200 crore being deposited directly into their personal bank accounts every day. This systemic digital push aligns seamlessly with the central government’s newly launched “White Revolution 2.0” master plan, which is architected to triple India’s national milk production capacity over the next decade through aggressive technological integration, including the rollout of Amul’s new AI-powered digital assistant named “Sarlaben.”

Beyond primary farmgate procurement, the expansion highlights the lasting market viability of the region’s unique consumer cooperative ecosystem, which has successfully operated in Gandhinagar for over 50 years. Supported by a loyal base of 15,000 members, this consumer-facing network manages the retail distribution of Madhur-branded dairy products across 230 dedicated urban hubs. Ultimately, the launch of this highly sophisticated, automated node reinforces Gujarat’s global reputation as a pioneer in cooperative development, proving that integrating advanced automation with fair profit-sharing models provides a resilient blueprint for sustainable rural development.
