R.S. Sodhi warns India’s dairy sector could face major challenges if farmers receive less than 70-80% of milk sale prices.
Sodhi Warns Dairy Sector Faces Margin Crisis Ahead

Former Amul chief says farmers must receive 70-80% of milk sale prices to keep India’s dairy industry sustainable.

R. S. Sodhi has warned that India’s dairy industry could face serious structural problems if milk producers do not receive a fair share of consumer prices. Speaking on the future of the sector, Sodhi stressed that dairy farmers should receive between 70% and 80% of the final milk sale price to maintain long-term sustainability and protect rural livelihoods.

Sodhi explained that India’s dairy model has historically succeeded because cooperatives ensured that the majority of revenues flowed directly back to producers. He argued that unlike many private-sector models, cooperative systems prioritize farmer welfare over excessive corporate margins, helping India become the world’s largest milk producer while supporting millions of smallholders.

The former Amul executive emphasized that dairy remains one of the few agricultural sectors where farmers receive regular daily income. However, he cautioned that rising production costs, feed expenses and operational pressures are tightening margins at the farm level. If farmers are denied equitable returns, the industry risks reduced milk production and declining farmer participation.

Sodhi also highlighted the broader economic role of dairy in India’s rural economy, particularly for women and small-scale producers. He noted that the cooperative dairy structure has created stable income opportunities across villages while contributing to nutritional security and employment generation. Maintaining farmer profitability, he said, is essential for preserving this social and economic ecosystem.

Looking ahead, Sodhi urged policymakers and dairy processors to focus on balanced value distribution across the supply chain. He warned that excessive profiteering beyond the farmgate could weaken the foundation of India’s dairy success story. Ensuring fair milk pricing for producers, he argued, will be critical as domestic dairy demand continues to expand and competition intensifies.
