India’s Dairy Sector Surges 70% Under Modi Era

Amit Shah says India’s dairy industry has expanded rapidly through cooperative reforms, higher production and rural empowerment.

Amit Shah highlighted the rapid expansion of India’s dairy industry, stating that the sector has grown by 70% over the past decade under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Speaking at a dairy-sector event, Shah said the industry has become one of the country’s strongest rural economic engines, improving farmer incomes and strengthening cooperative structures nationwide.

According to Shah, India’s dairy production has increased significantly during this period, reinforcing the country’s position as the world’s largest milk producer. He emphasized that cooperative-driven dairy development has played a central role in supporting millions of small farmers, particularly in rural regions where livestock remains a key source of livelihood and economic stability.

The minister noted that government initiatives have focused heavily on expanding dairy infrastructure, improving milk procurement systems and enhancing value-added dairy processing. He also stressed the importance of modernizing the sector through technology adoption, better veterinary support and stronger farmer participation in cooperative institutions.

Shah said the cooperative dairy model continues to serve as a powerful mechanism for inclusive rural development by ensuring fair market access and stable returns for producers. He pointed to the contribution of dairy cooperatives in increasing employment opportunities, strengthening women’s participation in agriculture and supporting broader food security objectives across India.

The government believes the dairy sector still holds substantial growth potential, particularly as domestic demand for milk and dairy products continues to rise. Officials indicated that future policy efforts will focus on increasing productivity, improving supply chains and expanding India’s global competitiveness in dairy exports while maintaining support for smallholder farmers.
