Ramanagara: Taking a bold step to reduce plastic pollution, the Bengaluru Milk Union Limited (Bamul) has begun supplying Nandini milk in biodegradable covers, starting from the Kanakapura Mega Dairy, on the occasion of World Environment Day.
Until now, milk was being packed in polythene covers, which are harmful to the environment. Although the government has enforced a plastic ban, milk packaging was exempted due to a lack of viable alternatives. To address the environmental concerns posed by plastic milk packets, Bamul has now initiated the use of biodegradable packaging.
New production begins at Kanakapura unit
The newly set up Mega Dairy plant near Shivanahalli in Kanakapura has started using decomposable covers. As a pilot project, 2 lakh biodegradable covers are being used to pack milk. Bamul aims to extend this environment-friendly initiative to all its milk packaging operations in the future.
A potential solution to the city’s waste crisis
Bamul supplies milk and curd to nearly half of Bengaluru city. The cooperative sells around 14 lakh litres of milk and curd daily in packets ranging from 200 ml to 1 litre. This leads to the use of 20 to 25 lakh plastic covers each day, contributing significantly to urban waste. By switching to biodegradable milk packets, Bamul hopes to provide a partial solution to the city’s growing garbage problem.
What is biodegradable plastic?
Conventional plastic milk covers take over 500 years to decompose. In contrast, the biodegradable covers planned by Bamul break down much faster, like other organic materials. These eco-friendly plastic covers dissolve in about six months, thereby reducing plastic waste and its long-term environmental impact.
Imported with advanced technology
The new biodegradable covers are made from corn-based material and are manufactured using foreign technology. They are similar in appearance to existing polythene covers but are slightly more expensive. Despite the higher cost, Bamul is moving forward with this initiative for the sake of environmental sustainability.
Bamul’s first-of-its-kind initiative in India
Bamul has become the first milk federation in the country to introduce biodegradable packaging for milk. The new initiative was launched at the Kanakapura Mega Dairy on June 5, in line with World Environment Day. Former MP and Bamul Director D.K. Suresh inspected the facility and reviewed the new eco-friendly production process.
“Bamul has proudly introduced biodegradable milk packets for the first time in India. This pilot initiative marks a new step by our cooperative to curb plastic pollution on World Environment Day,” said D.K. Suresh, former MP and Bamul Director.
