Minister Sudhangshu Das opens a new liquid nitrogen plant in Tripura, driving 45,000-liter annual capacity to secure local cattle breeding.
Tripura Steps Toward Self-Reliance in Livestock

Animal Resource Development Minister Sudhangshu Das inaugurates a state-of-the-art liquid nitrogen plant to secure localized cattle breeding infrastructure.

The government of Tripura has achieved a major infrastructure milestone in its regional animal husbandry sector with the official inauguration of a state-of-the-art liquid nitrogen production plant at RK Nagar in Agartala. Established under the Animal Resource Development Department (ARDD), the newly constructed plant complex and dedicated office building were formally unveiled by Animal Resource Development Minister Sudhangshu Das. This targeted state-led project is designed to modernize local livestock development networks and significantly enhance regional breeding capabilities.

A primary operational driver behind this capital installation is the critical requirement for liquid nitrogen in carrying out extensive artificial insemination programs across the northeastern state. The specialized substance serves as an essential cooling medium for preserving elite genetic material and bull semen doses used by the Tripura Livestock Development Agency (TLDA). Prior to the commissioning of this facility, the regional dairy and cattle sectors faced persistent supply risks, relying heavily on importing liquid nitrogen from external suppliers outside state borders.

With the addition of the new RK Nagar site, Tripura now boasts three active liquid nitrogen production facilities, joining existing state-operated units located in Udaipur and Kumarghat. Operating in tandem, these three regional plants are projected to generate a baseline volume of approximately 45,000 liters of liquid nitrogen annually, with each individual asset contributing a production capacity of 15,000 liters. This synchronized manufacturing network provides the state’s livestock infrastructure with an immediate, reliable layer of localized supply security.

While the combined output of the current infrastructure marks a significant upgrade, it satisfies only a portion of the state’s aggregate demand, which currently ranges between 50,000 and 100,000 liters annually. To completely eliminate this supply deficit, Minister Das announced an aggressive expansion blueprint aimed at scaling total state production capacity to nearly 140,000 liters. This forward-looking capacity building is designed to completely fulfill internal dairy breeding requirements while creating a net surplus for regional distribution.

Ultimately, this infrastructure advancement is structured to deliver direct microeconomic benefits to thousands of smallholders and rural families throughout Tripura by boosting overall herd productivity, improving livestock genetics, and driving up farmgate milk and meat returns. Minister Das characterized the collaborative project as a historic success for the department, extending formal praise to the engineers, technical staff, and TLDA management who implemented the build. By anchoring its breeding logistics in localized production, the state is actively strengthening its long-term self-sufficiency and rural economic resilience.
