Spearheaded by a new administrative crackdown under Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe, the digital grievance system records 10 lakh hits within 24 hours.
Pune district has registered the highest number of consumer complaints regarding unhygienic food practices across Maharashtra since the state’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) launched its new online grievance portal. Announcing the metrics at a food safety conference hosted by the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce, Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA), FDA Commissioner Tukaram Mundhe revealed that the digital platform, complaints.mahafda.in, experienced massive public engagement. The site recorded nearly 10 lakh hits and thousands of distinct submissions within the first 24 hours of going live, with the vast majority of filings originating from the Pune metropolitan area and pointing to unsanitary practices in commercial food establishments.
The high volume of public reports marks a major shift in public transparency and regulatory enforcement across the state. The new online portal features an automated grievance redressal architecture explicitly designed to ensure bureaucratic accountability. Under this system, regional FDA Joint Commissioners are mandated to formally acknowledge and assign an incoming complaint to a field inspector within 24 hours. If field investigations or statutory enforcement actions are not initiated within a strict prescribed timeline, the file is automatically escalated to senior ministerial desk officers to eliminate internal delays.
This digital rollout coincides with a highly aggressive, state-wide enforcement campaign spearheaded by Mundhe since assuming the role of FDA chief in May. Field teams have intensified unannounced inspections across high-risk dining segments, including luxury hotels, regional restaurants, and roadside dhabas. The ongoing crackdown has already led to high-profile enforcement actions, including the formal suspension of the operating license of Mumbai’s historic Parsi Dairy Farm following the detection of severe hygiene violations, alongside the forced closure of the institutional kitchen at Mumbai’s KEM Hospital.
To support these field actions with long-term structural changes, the FDA is urging all food business operators to transition toward certified Food Safety Management Systems. Establishments must strictly adhere to the 22 comprehensive core regulations laid down by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), covering everything from clean raw material storage to advanced staff hygiene tracking. Furthermore, Mundhe revealed that the department is actively exploring the integration of decentralized blockchain technology to build an unalterable, transparent historical record of repeat corporate violators and administrative actions.
The immediate surge in digital filings highlights deep-seated consumer concerns regarding urban food preparation standards while reflecting growing public confidence in the agency’s newly structured transparency tools. By providing citizens with a direct, friction-free channel to upload evidence of contamination, the administration intends to permanently reshape the food safety culture within Maharashtra’s commercial spaces. For operators across major dining hubs like Pune, matching these modernized public oversight tools will require consistent investment in clean-label supply chains and modernized back-of-house kitchen infrastructure.
