Through flagship initiatives such as the Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF) and the National Digital Livestock Mission (NDLM), the Ministry is subsidizing modern cold-chain networks, milk testing laboratories, and digital herd traceability to help smallholders lower production losses and capture better farmgate realizations.

Alongside pricing disclosures, parliamentary submissions detailed extensive food safety surveillance conducted across India’s dairy supply chain by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). National testing reports revealed that thousands of milk and dairy product samples analyzed across various state jurisdictions were flagged as non-conforming, spanning categories from sub-standard compositional parameters to active chemical adulteration and microbial contamination.

In response to the non-conforming findings, regulatory authorities across states have escalated civil penalties, license suspensions, and criminal prosecutions against delinquent operators. The FSSAI’s surveillance data underscores that while primary milk production continues to expand nationwide, enforcement agencies are tightening quality benchmarks to prevent adulteration, misbranding, and unhygienic processing in both informal milk collection hubs and commercial plants.
