Progressive Dairy Farmers Association spearheads a massive NZ$51,000 rehabilitation effort for families devastated by the August 2025 floods in Amritsar.
The Progressive Dairy Farmers Association (PDFA), the leading representative body for dairy farmers across the state of Punjab, has implemented a significant rehabilitation program to support families impacted by the devastating floods in the Ramdas region of Amritsar district in August 2025. This coordinated effort highlights the strong community and professional resilience within the Indian dairy sector, moving beyond immediate crisis response toward sustainable economic revival for those most affected.
A core component of this recovery initiative involves the direct distribution of 50 high-yield buffaloes to identified beneficiaries. These valuable animals, specifically the robust Murrah and Nili-Ravi breeds, were procured by the PDFA at a cost of approximately Rs 51 lakh (NZ$51,000 equivalent). This targeted investment aims to instantly restore the productive capacity and primary income source for the families whose herds were decimated by the floodwaters.
The association’s rehabilitation efforts are structured in distinct phases, ensuring both immediate relief and long-term stability. The first phase, carried out earlier this year, saw the PDFA allocate Rs 55 lakh (NZ$55,000 equivalent) toward essential inputs. This included crucial supplies such as fodder, veterinary medicines, seeds, manure, and silage, ensuring the immediate survival and care of the remaining livestock and agricultural land.
According to Daljit Singh Sadarpura, President of the PDFA, the dual-phase program has a clear strategic objective: to not only restore dairy operations but also to guarantee the economic revival and long-term stability of the affected families. The distribution of the high-yield buffaloes marks the transition into the second, more permanent phase of rebuilding, providing families with assets that offer a sustainable path back to profitability in milk production.
With the distribution of the 50 buffaloes now complete, the PDFA has assured the dairy community that the remaining funds allocated from the overall relief corpus will be utilized swiftly for further rehabilitation measures within the affected belt. This commitment underscores the PDFA’s dedication to securing the future of its farming community and reinforces the importance of professional associations in driving post-disaster recovery within the specialized field of agribusiness.
