DK Suresh enters dairy politics after Lok Sabha defeat

Bengaluru: A year after being defeated in the Lok Sabha election, former member of parliament and deputy chief minister DK Shivakumar’s brother, DK Suresh, entered dairy politics in the state on Saturday by filing his nomination papers for the director post from Kanakapura for Bengaluru Urban, Bengaluru Rural, and Ramanagara Districts Co-Operative Milk Producers Societies Union Limited (Bamul).

Suresh said he decided to contest in the Bamul election at the insistence of party leaders. There are talks that Suresh entered dairy politics to gain a strong hold on the milk unions and also to become Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) chairman. When asked about his interest in the KMF chairman position after his rest period, he said: “The KMF matter is not under discussion right now. Our party leaders served as presidents and directors of Bamul for the past 10 years. I’m standing with them because they insisted I should be with them. I submitted my nomination based on everyone’s advice and suggestions by our party leaders.”

Suresh was supposed to contest in Channapatna assembly byelection, but he did not show interest. When asked about it, he said: “MLAs, former directors and presidents of Bamul, and many district leaders expressed their opinions for my contest. As a party worker, I had to bow to their words.”

Presently, DK Shivakumar’s supporter HP Rajkumar from Kanakapura is the president of Bamul, one of the 16 subsidiary unions of KMF. The election was already held for 14 unions, and elections for Bamul and Komul (Kolar district cooperative milk producers union) are going on. Congress-backed candidates won 13 of 14 union president posts. The lone exception is Hassan union, where JD(S) veteran HD Revanna retained his position.

According to sources, the incumbent chairman LBP Bheema Naik, DK Suresh, and Malur MLA KY Nanje Gowda may become the strong aspirants for the chairman position.
