Chairman Pan Gang outlines a vision for digital integration, cross-border innovation, and 2050 value-chain carbon neutrality as Hohhot receives the “World Dairy Capital” title.

Reporting by China Daily details key proceedings from the 2026 World Dairy Industry Conference in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, where Yili Group Chairman and President Pan Gang issued a global call to action for deeper international collaboration. Co-hosted by Chinese dairy leaders Yili Group and Mengniu Group under the theme “Technology Driven, Partnership Oriented, and Co-building a Sustainable Global Dairy Ecosystem,” the two-day summit brought together global trade association leaders, agricultural scientists, and multinational corporate executives.

A major highlight of the conference opening ceremony was the official presentation of the “World Dairy Capital” designation to Hohhot by the International Union of Food Science and Technology (IUFoST). Pan Gang accompanied Hohhot Mayor He Haidong in accepting the plaque and trophy from IUFoST President-Elect Pavinee Chinachoti, who recognized Hohhot’s long-standing contributions to international dairy development and praised enterprise leaders like Yili for advancing scientific innovation in healthy foods.

In his keynote address, Pan emphasized that the dairy sector’s core mission extends beyond supplying basic nutrition to actively improving global public health amidst rapid technological shifts, climate pressures, and supply chain realignments. He argued that true technological innovation cannot be achieved through isolated corporate efforts, but must instead rely on open, international scientific collaboration that integrates research expertise across borders.

Outlining Yili’s strategic vision for a modern dairy ecosystem, Pan focused on digitalization and environmental stewardship. On digital transformation, he called for intelligent technologies to benefit the entire agricultural value chain rather than single enterprises, highlighting Yili’s efforts to build an interconnected digital network linking upstream dairy farmers with downstream distribution partners.

Regarding environmental sustainability, Pan reaffirmed Yili’s commitment to achieving full value-chain carbon neutrality before 2050—making it the first Chinese dairy company to establish a comprehensive net-zero roadmap. Through its “dual footprint” management framework addressing both carbon and water usage, Yili remains the sole agri-food enterprise selected for the United Nations’ Corporate Net-Zero Pathways initiative, positioning the group as a central driver of sustainable growth in the global dairy sector.
