Food safety authorities seize stock and issue market recall across Jammu and Kashmir following substandard and non-conforming laboratory reports.
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) of Jammu and Kashmir has prohibited the sale, distribution, and storage of ten specific batches of commercial ghee across the Union Territory after laboratory analyses revealed severe violations of prescribed quality standards. The regulatory intervention was triggered by widespread surveillance sampling aimed at monitoring dairy commodities and fat adulteration in consumer channels.
Official testing conducted at designated state food testing laboratories confirmed that the flagged batches failed to comply with statutory compositional parameters set under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. The test reports indicated significant discrepancies in standard purity metrics, including altered fatty acid profiles, substandard Reichert-Meissl (RM) and Polenske values, and non-conformity with moisture and butyro-refractometer specifications.
Following the adverse laboratory findings, food safety enforcement officers launched coordinated market drives across retail outlets, distributor warehouses, and wholesale supply points. Authorities seized non-compliant stocks and directed food business operators (FBOs) to immediately recall the affected production batches from circulation to prevent misleading consumption.
Designated enforcement officers confirmed that formal legal proceedings are being initiated against the offending manufacturers, distributors, and marketing entities responsible for supplying the adulterated batches. Penal provisions under food safety regulations include financial penalties, compounding orders, and potential cancellation of operational licenses for repeat violators.
The regulatory crackdown aligns with broader nationwide enforcement initiatives targeting milk, paneer, and ghee authenticity ahead of the high-demand festive period. The J&K FDA urged consumers to inspect packaging details, FSSAI registration numbers, and batch credentials, while reiterating its commitment to maintaining rigorous surveillance across regional dairy supply chains.
