India's IDMC commissions a fully automated, 1 MLPD dairy plant for Freshways in West Bromwich, showcasing Indian engineering in the UK.
Indian Dairy Engineering Goes Global with IDMC’s Fully Automated UK Processing Plant

Under a milestone partnership between NDDB’s subsidiary and Freshways, a ₹250 million (£25m) facility in West Bromwich begins operations to process 1 million liters of milk daily.

In a major milestone for India’s engineering sector, IDMC Ltd, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), has commissioned a state-of-the-art, fully automated dairy processing plant for Freshways in West Bromwich, near Birmingham, UK. The massive facility, boasting a processing capacity of 1 million liters of milk per day (MLPD), was officially inaugurated by Dr. Meenesh Shah, Chairman of NDDB and IDMC. This international project represents one of the most significant overseas engineering achievements for an Indian dairy technology firm to date, proving the country’s rising competitiveness in advanced, large-scale industrial manufacturing.

Representing a £25 million (approx. ₹2.5 billion) total investment by Freshways, the UK’s largest independent dairy supplier, the plant is designed to handle up to 500 million liters of milk annually. Every piece of specialized machinery—including five massive, 17-ton stainless steel silos capable of holding a combined 625,000 liters of fresh milk—was designed, manufactured, and shipped directly from IDMC’s fabrication hubs in Gujarat, India. To ensure precise setup, a dedicated team of Indian installation engineers spent months on-site, overseeing the assembly and training local UK personnel.

The highly sophisticated facility features complete automation, linking advanced milk reception units, high-efficiency heat exchangers, automated Clean-in-Place (CIP) systems, and specialized product-recovery technology to minimize waste. On the packaging end, the facility integrates compact, state-of-the-art robotic palletizers to streamline end-of-line logistics in a highly compressed footprint. This dense layer of process automation is designed to maximize overall thermal efficiency and protect hygiene standards, enabling Freshways to rapidly process and package raw milk sourced from hundreds of British farms across the Midlands.

This cross-border collaboration represents one of the first major industrial engineering transactions finalized following the signing of the UK-India Free Trade Agreement. For Freshways, the modernized West Bromwich hub provides a 25% boost in overall processing capacity, helping the brand meet a sharp surge in retail and food-service demand. Beyond expanding output, the plant is expected to create at least 200 high-quality local jobs, with the company actively coordinating with local municipal leaders to prioritize youth employment programs.

For the Indian dairy ecosystem, which has long mastered high-volume fluid milk handling domestically, the successful delivery of this turnkey project signals a transition from domestic equipment supply to global infrastructure partnership. NDDB and IDMC leadership view the Birmingham project as a successful proof-of-concept for the “Make in India” initiative, showcasing that Indian manufacturing can successfully compete with established European engineering firms. This landmark installation is expected to open the doors for IDMC to secure additional high-value dairy processing contracts across Europe, the Middle East, and Africa.
