Rising demand for sports nutrition, ready-to-drink protein beverages, and GLP-1 dietary support drives a surge in whey protein prices and domestic processing investments.
Reporting by Wang Zhuoqiong for China Daily details how China’s dairy industry is shifting its strategic focus toward functional proteins. During the 17th Dairy Conference in Nanchang, Jiangxi province, industry leaders highlighted high-value ingredients as a core priority to unlock stronger profit margins across the nutrition, functional wellness, and food processing sectors.
Commodity monitoring data from StoneX underscores a sharp global price rally for premium dairy proteins. Over the past two years, whey protein concentrate (WPC) prices climbed 108%, while whey protein isolate (WPI) prices jumped 139%, with high-grade specifications such as WPC80 and WPI90 more than doubling. The price surge reflects constrained near-term processing capacity combined with accelerating global demand for high-protein diets, expanding adoption among consumers taking GLP-1 weight-loss medications, and tight global supply.
Once limited to niche sports nutrition, protein supplementation is rapidly penetrating China’s broader consumer market. Data from Broadview Consulting indicates China’s sports nutrition sector grew at a 22.7% CAGR between 2015 and 2024, expanding to 6.8 billion yuan ($1 billion) in 2025, with protein powders accounting for 62% of sales. Concurrently, ready-to-drink (RTD) liquid protein formats are booming; Moojing Market Intelligence figures show online RTD liquid protein sales surged 478.4% year-on-year to 34.72 million yuan, driven by sports drinks, energy-control shakes, and meal replacements.
International ingredient exporters and Chinese dairy giants are moving aggressively to capture market share. Irish food board Bord Bia reported a 32% year-on-year surge in Irish whey exports to China in 2025, while casein export values grew 36%. Domestically, market leaders Yili Group and Mengniu Group have introduced high-protein liquid milks (delivering up to 15g of protein per bottle) and entered the emerging protein water segment. Furthermore, Yili is advancing intelligent manufacturing facilities to expand domestic production of high-value lactoferrin, casein, and whey protein.
Ultimately, China’s pivot toward specialized protein production marks a structural evolution in its domestic dairy sector. By expanding local processing capacity—aiming for a combined daily processing capacity of 10,000 to 15,000 metric tons within three to five years—Chinese dairy producers seek to gain greater upstream control over premium milk components, reduce import dependency, and capitalize on high-margin functional health trends.
