Pulwama leads regional district rankings as J&K outperforms several states in registering functional village-level dairy cooperatives on the national dashboard.
Data tabled before the Lok Sabha by the Union Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying reveals that Jammu and Kashmir has 2,053 functional Dairy Cooperative Societies (DCS) registered on the Union Government’s Milk Supply Review Dashboard. Based on National Cooperative Database records accessed on July 17, 2026, J&K accounts for roughly 1.7% of India’s 119,839 active dairy cooperatives (which includes 24,097 multipurpose societies), while neighboring Ladakh accounts for 11 functional societies.
District-level figures show significant concentration in south and central Kashmir. Pulwama district leads Jammu and Kashmir with 270 functional dairy cooperative societies, followed closely by Baramulla with 248, Jammu with 216, Budgam with 173, Kulgam with 171, Shopian with 164, and Anantnag with 160. Srinagar recorded 21 functional societies, while Doda recorded four, representing the lowest total among listed districts.
In terms of regional standing, Jammu and Kashmir’s 2,053 societies put it ahead of several Indian states, including Himachal Pradesh (1,167), Assam (1,230), Kerala (3,347), and Haryana (2,463). However, J&K remains below major cooperative dairy strongholds such as Karnataka (16,851), Gujarat (15,897), Rajasthan (13,196), Maharashtra (12,544), Bihar (10,807), Uttar Pradesh (7,658), Madhya Pradesh (6,401), and Punjab (5,346).
Beyond cooperative registrations, the ministry detailed capital mobilization efforts under the Animal Husbandry Infrastructure Development Fund (AHIDF). Featuring a 3% interest subvention scheme, the fund has mobilized ₹30,938 crore in total private investment across livestock sectors, of which ₹21,312.62 crore was directed specifically into dairy processing and infrastructure expansion nationwide.
Regarding extension services, the government highlighted that 4,019 Mobile Veterinary Units (MVUs) are currently operational across India under the Livestock Health and Disease Control Programme, accessible to farmers via the toll-free helpline 1962. The ministry noted that existing support schemes will continue to strengthen regional milk collection networks without introducing additional standalone programmes.
