West Bengal Chief Minister to perform the foundation stone ceremony for a mega facility set to become a major hub for regional processing.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is scheduled to officially perform the bhumi puja (foundation stone ceremony) for Amul’s upcoming state-of-the-art dairy processing plant in Sankrail, Howrah. Representing a major capital investment of ₹600 crore, the high-capacity industrial installation highlights the cooperative giant’s long-term commitment to expanding its manufacturing footprint across eastern India. The foundation ceremony underscores the strategic collaboration between regional governance and corporate dairy leaders to drive rural economic development.
The mega-facility will be developed and managed under the operational framework of the Kaira District Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Limited, a core union operating under the Amul umbrella. Spanning a massive 16-acre industrial plot within the designated food park area, the infrastructure project is designed to satisfy rising consumer demand for fresh fluid milk and value-added dairy categories across West Bengal. This targeted regional expansion follows Amul’s sustained commercial success and dominant market position within the state’s liquid milk sector.
Once fully operational, the plant will boast an impressive maximum milk processing capacity of 15 lakh litres per day, establishing it as a central processing powerhouse for the region. A primary manufacturing focus for the new facility will be the high-volume production of cultured dairy products, specifically aiming to produce 10 lakh kilograms of curd on a daily basis. The specialized production lines will cater directly to local dietary preferences, ensuring a consistent supply of traditional fresh curd and sweetened varieties.
The multi-crore project is structured to execute its commercial rollout across two distinct operational phases, allowing engineering teams to scale up processing modules systematically. This phased expansion strategy ensures that local distribution logistics and raw milk collection networks can expand in parallel with factory output. By establishing a localized manufacturing base of this scale, the processing union will drastically reduce transport times and enhance product shelf-life throughout urban supply chains.
For the international dairy community and domestic agricultural analysts, this heavy infrastructure investment signals a major consolidation of organized dairy procurement in eastern India. The factory’s massive raw milk requirement is expected to create robust, long-term economic incentives for regional dairy farmers, expanding formal cooperative collection routes. As construction advances at the Sankrail site, the project sets a new benchmark for corporate dairy manufacturing and value-added asset distribution nationwide.
