State cabinet raises Nandini retail prices from November 1, transferring ₹7 directly to producers to curb border milk outflows and offset severe fodder deficits.

The Karnataka Cabinet has approved an ₹8 per litre increase across all categories of milk marketed under the state’s flagship Nandini brand, effective November 1. Defending the tariff revision, state leadership highlighted that the decision was necessary to protect the economic livelihoods of nearly 29 lakh dairy producers facing compounding drought pressures, severe fodder shortages, and soaring operational expenses. While regional dairy farmer unions had initially petitioned for an upward adjustment of ₹12 per litre, the state administration opted for an ₹8 revision to balance rural producer sustainability against urban consumer living costs.

Under the financial structure approved by the government, the bulk of the retail price adjustment will flow directly to grassroots livestock keepers. Of the ₹8 per litre increase, ₹7 will be transferred directly to farmers, raising the base procurement payout from ₹35 to ₹42 per litre. The remaining ₹1 per litre is allocated to district cooperative milk unions to cover climbing operational overheads, freight rates, and processing expenses. When factoring in the state government’s ongoing ₹5 per litre direct incentive subsidy, Karnataka dairy farmers will now realize an aggregate payout of ₹47 per litre of milk supplied to village cooperative societies.

From a dairy production and supply chain security perspective, the price adjustment responds to a decline in cooperative milk procurement volumes across Karnataka. Consecutive seasons of deficit rainfall and localized drought conditions have depleted groundwater tables, reduced green fodder cultivation, and sharply increased open-market prices for dry fodder and commercial cattle feed concentrates. Compounding these supply challenges, significant price disparities between Karnataka and neighboring states—including Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Telangana—had prompted local producers to divert raw milk supplies across state borders in search of higher spot cash realizations.

State authorities emphasized that boosting farmgate liquidity is essential to prevent herd liquidations and maintain bovine nutritional health during protracted dry spells. According to government estimates, the price revision will inject an additional ₹1,850 crore to ₹2,100 crore annually into rural households, with a producer supplying an average of 10 litres daily gaining approximately ₹2,100 in extra monthly income. With small and marginal farmers comprising roughly 67 percent of the 28.84 lakh registered members of the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF), targeted procurement increases provide a direct buffer against agricultural debt distress.

At the retail market and competitive positioning level, the state maintains that Nandini products will remain price-competitive compared to alternative private and cooperative dairy brands. Following the revision, Nandini toned milk will retail at ₹54 per litre, while Nandini Shubham (4.5 percent fat) will be priced at ₹60 per litre—retaining a discount against comparable premium pasteurized pouches in neighboring southern markets. Moving into 2027, the operational challenge for KMF and district milk unions will involve stabilizing dry fodder banks, maintaining processing efficiency, and safeguarding urban retail demand while ensuring that higher procurement revenues reach the dairy farmers sustaining Karnataka’s rural economy.
