Dakshina Kannada Milk Union reports record growth

DKMUL achieves historic ₹12.79 crore net profit, expands farmer welfare subsidies, and targets functional dairy beverages.

The Dakshina Kannada Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union (DKMUL), operating across Karnataka’s coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi, reported record financial and operational performance, logging an annual turnover of ₹1,174 crore and an all-time high net profit of ₹12.79 crore. Addressing a press conference in Mangaluru, DKMUL president Sucharitha Shetty detailed the cooperative’s operational milestones, noting a 16% year-on-year surge in daily milk collections to 3.97 lakh liters. Downstream commercial sales remained equally resilient, with daily dispatches averaging 4.02 lakh liters of fluid milk and 81,000 kilograms of curd.

The union reinforced its cooperative commitment to primary producer welfare, currently supporting a base procurement payout rate of ₹40.76 per liter to local dairy farmers. Through its dedicated farmer welfare trust, which covers nearly 55,000 member farmers across 751 primary cooperative societies, DKMUL disbursed ₹2.05 crore over the past year to mitigate emergency medical expenses, family hardship, and livestock losses. Additionally, the union extended formal livestock insurance coverage to more than 30,000 cattle, processing 1,177 verified casualty and indemnity claims to buffer farm households against catastrophic livestock mortality.

To support on-farm productivity and herd health across its two coastal districts, DKMUL announced an allocation of ₹2.6 crore in direct producer subsidies. These funds are channeled into green fodder cultivation assistance, machinery acquisition grants, and the establishment of scalable mini-dairy units. On the animal husbandry and veterinary front, the union scheduled a synchronized, district-wide cattle deworming campaign across all 751 member societies backed by an ₹8 lakh budget, alongside advanced plans to deploy embryo transfer protocols utilizing superior genetic donor cows to lift regional herd productivity.

Commercially, DKMUL is accelerating value addition under the flagship Nandini brand to capture higher retail margins and diversify beyond commoditized liquid pouches. The cooperative confirmed upcoming launches of innovative product lines, including Guava Chilly Lassi, Nandini Protein Punch, and specialized whey-based functional beverages. Processing capacity is being matched with capital infrastructure investments, highlighted by the commissioning of modern vacuumized thermoforming and paneer packaging machinery, the establishment of a regional administrative hub in Udupi, and dedicated water-sourcing civil works to ensure continuous utility supplies for processing dairies.

The performance of DKMUL highlights the ongoing modernization of regional dairy cooperatives under the Karnataka Milk Federation (KMF) umbrella. By pairing resilient farmgate purchase prices with targeted social safety nets and advanced reproductive technologies, the union protects smallholder farmer livelihoods against escalating feed and management costs. Concurrently, pivoting processing capacity toward protein-enriched and functional beverages enables regional cooperative federations to maintain commercial competitiveness against private FMCG processors while driving economic growth across southern India’s dairy corridors.
