Government testing finds small quality gaps but no health risks in state milk supply.
In an update to the Odisha State Assembly, Animal Resources Development Minister Gokulananda Mallik reported that regulatory testing of milk and dairy products in 2025 identified a small share of sub-standard samples, reflecting ongoing quality surveillance in the Indian dairy marketplace.
Authorities analysed 88 samples of various milk and milk products collected across the state and sent them to the State Food Testing Laboratory in Bhubaneswar. Of these, eight samples were found to be sub-standard — meaning they did not fully meet prescribed quality benchmarks — while the remaining 80 met established standards during the period under review.
Importantly, the minister emphasised that none of the tested dairy samples were deemed unsafe for consumption, a distinction that underscores quality shortfalls rather than direct food-safety threats to consumers. Such differentiation is key for producers and processors tracking enforcement outcomes and public confidence in milk products.
The testing programme encompasses products sold by a range of suppliers, including the state cooperative OMFED and 22 other companies, of which ten operate locally within Odisha and twelve are based outside the state. Regular monitoring by food safety authorities like the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India ensures dairy supply compliance with food standards norms.
For the broader dairy industry, government-reported sample outcomes reflect continuing efforts to uphold quality benchmarks while balancing enforcement with consumer reassurance, particularly in a sector where product integrity and regulatory scrutiny are central to market trust.
