Japan’s Dairy Sector Launches Emissions Project With New Farm Tool

Japan’s dairy sustainability efforts are taking another step forward as Snow Brand Milk Products and Alltech Japan begin a joint project designed to measure environmental performance at dairy farms while identifying management practices that support both productivity and emissions reduction.

The collaboration brings together Snow Brand Milk’s Dairy Research Institute and Alltech Japan GK to conduct demonstration research at a dairy farm in Hokkaido, Japan’s largest milk-producing region. The project will use the E-CO2 environmental assessment tool to quantify environmental footprints across selected dairy farms, agricultural fields, grasslands and related facilities.

Under the agreement, environmental assessments will be carried out by Alltech E-CO2 Ltd., using a methodology that complies with the International Dairy Federation’s carbon footprint guidelines for dairy farms.

Rather than focusing solely on emissions measurement, the initiative is intended to generate data that can support practical improvements in dairy management. Based on the assessment results, both organizations will jointly evaluate production strategies aimed at reducing greenhouse gas and carbon emissions while maintaining high levels of milk production.

The project aligns with Snow Brand Milk’s broader sustainability objectives, which include supporting environmentally responsible dairy farming and reducing the environmental impact of milk production. The company also said the initiative is intended to contribute to the development of a regenerative dairy and agricultural model.

For India’s dairy industry, where sustainability is becoming an increasingly important component of long-term sector development, the collaboration highlights the growing role of farm-level environmental measurement as a management tool rather than simply a reporting exercise.

The approach adopted in Hokkaido combines emissions assessment with production performance, reflecting a strategy that seeks to balance environmental objectives with operational efficiency on dairy farms.

Alltech Japan, headquartered in Fukuoka, is the Japanese subsidiary of Alltech Inc., the U.S.-based animal nutrition company founded in 1980 and headquartered in Kentucky. Operating in more than 120 countries, the group provides agricultural nutrition solutions, including natural functional feed additives developed through precision nutrition. In Japan, its activities include the manufacture, processing, import, export and sale of feed additive materials and functional feed ingredients.

The initiative also reflects increasing attention across Japan’s dairy industry toward measuring farm-level environmental performance as food producers and agricultural suppliers work to align milk production with broader decarbonization objectives.

With Hokkaido accounting for the country’s largest concentration of dairy production, the demonstration project may provide valuable operational insights into how environmental assessment tools can support more sustainable farm management while preserving production performance.
