Viral video of watered-down milk prompts suspension, probe and official scrutiny in Mahoba primary school.
A deeply troubling video from a government primary school in Mahoba district, Uttar Pradesh showed one litre of milk mixed into a bucket full of water and served to around 50 young students during the midday meal, igniting widespread outrage online and in local communities. The clip, recorded on a mobile phone, quickly circulated on social media, drawing sharp criticism from parents and education advocates concerned about child nutrition and welfare.
In response to the viral footage, district authorities, including the Basic Shiksha Adhikari (BSA) Rahul Mishra and the Sadar Sub-Divisional Magistrate, conducted an on-site inspection and detailed inquiry at the school. Statements were formally recorded from teachers and the school cook to establish the facts of the incident and clarify who was responsible for the blatant dilution of milk meant to nourish students under the mid-day meal scheme.
The school’s head teacher, Monica Soni, was suspended immediately after the video emerged, as she was seen in the footage while the drink was being diluted and did not intervene to stop it or ensure students received their entitled pure milk. Municipal officials noted that internal disputes among staff may have contributed to the breakdown in supervision, but emphasized that the ultimate lapse in duty rested with the school in-charge.
Authorities indicated that the statements of teachers, village education committee members and other stakeholders are being examined and will be compiled into a detailed report for the district magistrate and the basic education department, potentially informing further action against those responsible. Officials acknowledged the reputational harm such incidents cause to the public education system and pledged steps to prevent similar occurrences.
Local observers and parents have expressed deep concern about the implications for children’s health and the implementation of government nutrition programs, arguing that such disregard for dietary standards undermines policy aims and warrants stricter monitoring and accountability across the state’s schools.
