India’s top investigators find synthetic ghee use, not prohibited animal fat.
India’s Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has concluded that synthetic ghee, not beef tallow, was used in the preparation of the Tirupati laddu, contradicting claims made by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. The findings follow widespread public controversy around the sacred prasadam offered at the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), one of the world’s most visited religious institutions.
According to the CBI, laboratory analysis confirmed that the ghee supplied to the Tirupati temple contained vegetable-based and synthetic fats, but no traces of animal-origin tallow. The agency stated that the chemical composition detected does not support allegations of beef-derived ingredients, effectively debunking claims that sparked religious, political and social backlash.
The controversy originated when Chandrababu Naidu alleged that adulterated ghee, including beef tallow, had entered the temple supply chain during the previous YSR Congress Party government. These assertions gained traction on social media and television debates, raising serious concerns over food integrity, supply chain oversight and reputational risk for suppliers linked to religious food production.
The CBI investigation focused on procurement records, supplier documentation and forensic testing of ghee samples. While confirming the absence of prohibited animal fats, investigators highlighted the use of synthetic ghee, which remains a separate quality and compliance issue. The report underscores the importance of transparent sourcing and testing protocols, particularly for high-volume food production with cultural and religious sensitivity.
For the broader agri-food and dairy sector, the case illustrates how misinformation around food ingredients can escalate rapidly, affecting trust across supply chains. It also reinforces the need for robust traceability, quality assurance and clear communication, especially where dairy fats and substitutes intersect with consumer, cultural and regulatory scrutiny.
