Telangana’s Deputy CM urges women to lead the nation’s dairy production through the ambitious Indira Mahila Dairy Scheme.
Telangana’s Deputy Chief Minister, Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, has issued a strong call to women in the Madhira constituency, urging them to become national role models in dairy production. Speaking with beneficiaries of the newly launched Indira Mahila Dairy Scheme, he emphasized that establishing this women-led dairy initiative has been a long-standing goal. The scheme is designed with a twin focus: to economically empower women, helping them achieve self-reliance and potentially enabling many to become “millionaires” through dairy entrepreneurship.
The Indira Mahila Dairy Scheme represents a realization of a stalled vision dating back to 2013, during the era of united Andhra Pradesh. At that time, Vikramarka had planned to provide two milch cows to each of the 52,000 members of women’s Self-Help Groups (SHGs) in Madhira. However, the plan was put on hold due to the state’s bifurcation and subsequent neglect over the following decade. The launch of the “People’s Government” marked the opportunity to finally realize this long-cherished dream.
The scheme provides comprehensive support beyond just the animals. Each participating woman is given two high-breed cows along with continuous support for their upkeep. This includes the sanctioning of cattle sheds and assistance with solar power. To manage the supply chain efficiently, each mandal (administrative unit) will be organized into three operational zones, with every ten villages forming a distinct unit for effective implementation.
Further infrastructure and economic support are integral to the project’s success. Employment opportunities will be created for local youth, both male and female, to manage the supply of fodder and feed to the cattle. The government will also provide trolley autos for transportation of milk and products. Crucially for animal welfare and yield, veterinary doctors will conduct monthly check-ups and issue health cards for every cow, carefully tracking their milk yield and overall condition.
The ultimate vision is to establish a major dairy industry in Bonakal, in the Madhira area, modeled after successful Indian dairy brands like Amul, Vijaya, and Heritage. The project aims to generate a substantial Rs 1,000 crore annually and an accumulated Rs 5,000 crore over five years through large-scale dairy production. This ambitious women-centric program is positioned as a significant step toward transforming the regional agribusiness sector and creating financial independence for rural women.
