Kerala Feeds Limited (KFL) slashed the price of its cattle-feed bag by Rs 50 from today, considering higher expenses the dairy farmers in Kerala face in raising cows during the rainy season.
The PSU’s 45-kg bag of best-quality Dairy Rich Plus is being offered at a rebate of Rs 50, while the 50-kg bags of Midukki and Elite are being sold at a discount of Rs 40 and Rs 25 respectively during this monsoon season. “The price-cut will continue till we make an official announcement,” KFL Managing Director Dr B. Sreekumar said.
Of late, Kerala has clocked a slide in milk production owing to various reasons. These include issues resulting from climate change, aggravating the financial problems among the dairy farmers. These are prompting farmers to exit from dairying, leading the new generation to look at cattle-raising as a loss-making business.
While nutritious feeds are essential to groom calves into high milk-yielding cows, non-lactating ones too need to be fed well. For this, the price has to be low if the farmer has to earn a margin in the business. To ensure that, KFL is coming up with Kerala Feeds Mahima. It will be launched in the market during the middle of this month, Dr Sreekumar revealed.
KFL Mahima will sell at Rs 540 for a 20-kg bag. It carries ingredients necessary for the calf to grow into adulthood, though the product is not meant for increased productivity of milk. The calf can be given two to three kg of Mahima feed per day. The new feed is suitable for baby buffaloes to increase body weight, the KFL MD pointed out.
The 1995-founded KFL, headquartered in Kallettumkara near Irinjalakuda of this district, manufactures products for various breeds of cows with the aim of keeping them in good health as well as better productivity and quality of milk.
