Suspected electrical short circuit in cooling unit guts property worth lakhs; four fire tenders bring hours-long blaze under control with zero casualties.
A major fire broke out at a commercial dairy manufacturing facility in the Jagatpur Industrial Area of Cuttack district, Odisha, triggering an emergency multi-hour response by regional firefighting units. The blaze erupted early Thursday morning, sending dense plumes of black smoke billowing from the processing plant and warehouse premises, sparking acute concern among neighboring industrial facilities across the manufacturing hub.
Emergency response teams, including fire tenders dispatched from Chauliaganj and Salipur, deployed four units to battle the flames and prevent the fire from jumping to adjacent industrial compounds. Firefighters encountered difficult operational conditions due to thick, toxic smoke accumulating inside the warehouse, which temporarily prevented specialized Fire Services Department robotics equipment from accessing the internal structure.
According to Cuttack Deputy Range Fire Officer Abani Swain, the fire originated in the facility’s cooling and freezing section around 7:40 AM. Combustible materials stored in the godown—including thermocol insulation panels, tin packaging containers, and industrial air conditioning compressor components—accelerated the spread of the flames through the cold storage infrastructure.
Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported, as the cold-chain and packing floor was largely unoccupied when the blaze ignited. Authorities confirmed that property worth lakhs of rupees was gutted in the incident, primarily destroying refrigeration equipment, cold-room insulation, and stored packaging inventory before fire teams brought the perimeter under complete control.
Preliminary assessments by fire safety inspectors suggest that an electrical short circuit inside the cooling unit triggered the blaze. A joint investigation involving Jagatpur Police and the Odisha Fire Services Department has been launched to determine the definitive root cause of the failure and evaluate whether the dairy processing plant maintained mandatory fire safety protocols and regulatory building compliance standards.
