The primary objective of combining silk rearing and milk production is to insulate smallholders against regional agrarian risks, such as monsoonal dry spells, crop failures, and volatile single-commodity market prices. Under the joint framework led by the Parbhani District Sericulture Development Office in partnership with the State Bank of India (SBI), participating farmers receive structured institutional loans ranging from ₹7 lakh to ₹8 lakh to procure dairy livestock and set up mulberry cultivation alongside rearing sheds.

A major advantage of the model is its operational synergy. Mulberry cultivation requires minimal water, thrives in dryland soils, and generates low-cost, nutrient-rich biomass that can supplement cattle feed. Concurrently, dairy manure provides organic fertilizer for the mulberry plots, creating a closed-loop farm ecosystem that lowers reliance on expensive chemical inputs and minimizes baseline operational costs.

Beyond economic diversification, the “Silk and Milk” framework serves as a core vehicle for rural women’s empowerment and financial inclusion under Maharashtra’s broader Lakhpati Didi initiative. Because both sericulture (chawki rearing and cocoon management) and daily animal husbandry heavily involve household female labor, direct banking linkages ensure that milk payouts and silk sales flow directly into women’s bank accounts, elevating their role in household decision-making.
