Innovation developed at the Department of Dairy Science and Food Technology blends dairy bioactive proteins with plant extracts for natural digestive health.
A multidisciplinary research team from Banaras Hindu University (BHU) has been granted an Indian patent for developing a novel composite antacid tablet formulated with milk protein and aloe vera. As reported by The News Mill (via ANI), the Patent Office of the Government of India officially awarded Patent No. 597350 (Application No. 202311057324) for the proprietary technology, which was conceived and formulated within BHU’s Department of Dairy Science and Food Technology under the Institute of Agricultural Sciences.
The breakthrough formulation is designed to explore a functional, protein-enriched approach to managing gastrointestinal acidity and digestive discomfort without relying solely on synthetic chemical alkalis. By integrating high-buffering milk-derived proteins with the natural soothing and mucosal-protective properties of aloe vera, the composite matrix creates a dual-action oral delivery mechanism. The research bridges the boundary between dairy science, nutritional chemistry, and pharmacognosy, targeting the rapidly expanding wellness market for naturally derived gastrointestinal remedies.
The patent lists senior academic and current Vice-Chancellor of Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Bihar University (BRABU), Professor Dinesh Chandra Rai, as the lead inventor. Rai collaborated with an inventor team comprising Raj Kumar Duary, Arvind, Ruchi Chawla, Ridhi Pandey, and Krishna Kumar. Emphasizing the milestone, Rai noted that the patent reflects a long-term academic commitment to moving dairy innovations from the farm and laboratory bench directly into functional, health-supporting consumer products.
The patented technology is positioned within the strategic domain of dairy value addition, demonstrating commercial avenues for utilizing milk fractions and specialized protein isolates beyond conventional liquid consumption and dairy commodities. Academic and industry observers point out that developing functional pharmaceutical and nutraceutical applications for surplus milk components provides dairy processors with resilient, margin-accretive product categories that are largely insulated from volatile bulk dairy pricing cycles.
While securing the patent establishes statutory intellectual property ownership, commercial deployment will require structured industrial scale-up, stability testing, and rigorous clinical validation to verify efficacy relative to standard over-the-counter antacids. The inventors noted that the patent provides the legal and scientific foundation to pursue industry partnerships and commercial licensing, offering the Indian and global dairy processing sectors a verified framework to merge traditional botanical knowledge with dairy-derived clinical formulations.
