After the hike in prices of fuel, LPG cylinder and kitchen essentials, the price of milk went up by Rs 3 per litre in the capital city from Friday.

Earlier, a litre of milk was being sold for Rs 51 in the wholesale market and 53 litre in retail. Now, a litre of milk will be sold for Rs 54 per litre in wholesale and Rs 56 per litre in retail markets in the city.

The Greater Guwahati Dairy Business Association president Padam Basnet said the decision to increase the price has been taken after a hike in prices at source. “The dairy farms have increased the prices. We are just businessmen. We have also no option than to increase the prices.” A total of 1.60 lakh litres of milk are sold in Guwahati per day involving a total of 520 people. Meanwhile, the hotel owners of the city have indicated a hike in prices of sweets and other milk products soon.

Basnet said, “The Brihattar Guwahati Gou Palak Sangstha (BGGPS) informed us in writing in April this year that it would hike the prices of milk. However, the matter was kept on hold after we requested not to take such a decision amid Covid-19 situation. But, this time, they have increased the price.” It may be mentioned that an LPG cylinder costs Rs 883, petrol Rs 99 per litre and mustard oil Rs 200-220 per litre in the city. Increase in fuel prices has affected the prices of vegetables and other essential items also.
