Demonstrations at Krishna District Milk Union demand price rollback, alleging government policies favor private corporate dairies.

Political opposition and consumer activist groups in Andhra Pradesh have staged demonstrations against the Krishna District Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union, popularly known as Vijaya Dairy, protesting a recent retail price hike across consumer fluid milk variants. Organized by the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)], party cadre and civil society leaders converged on the dairy’s central administrative block and processing plant in Vijayawada. Protesters raised slogans against the management board and the state coalition administration, calling for an immediate rollback of consumer rate increases that disproportionately burden working-class and lower-middle-income urban families.

The tariff adjustments apply across multiple packaged liquid milk categories, including standardized, toned, and full-cream fluid pouches distributed throughout the state’s central coastal corridor. Union management cited structural cost pressures—namely elevated procurement overheads, escalating cold-chain electricity tariffs, and surging diesel logistics expenses—as primary drivers requiring downstream retail revisions. However, consumer advocacy groups criticized the timing and magnitude of the adjustments, highlighting that repetitive upward revisions within a matter of weeks undermine the fundamental cooperative social charter of offering essential nutritional staples at affordable, regulated price points.

During the agitations, CPI(M) leadership alleged that state agricultural and dairy policies are systematically weakening cooperative dairy federation infrastructure to create commercial space for private corporate players. Protesters raised pointed conflict-of-interest allegations regarding private commercial brands such as Heritage Foods, arguing that reducing state subsidies, delaying working-capital grants, and eroding cooperative retail price competitiveness inadvertently drives price-sensitive urban consumers into the commercial arms of private competitors. Demonstrators demanded that the state government intervene directly to provide operational subventions rather than passing off operational deficits to household consumers.

The controversy reflects an enduring political and commercial tension within India’s cooperative dairy federations: reconciling fair, remunerative farmgate procurement payouts for rural smallholders against the purchasing power of price-sensitive urban consumers. As animal feed, green fodder, and veterinary inputs inflate at the village level, district cooperative unions face persistent pressure from primary producer members to increase procurement rates. When municipal and state administrations resist extending direct financial support or milk consumption subsidies, cooperative processing unions are left with little recourse other than raising consumer pouch prices at the retail counter.

The political standoff in Vijayawada underscores the complex socioeconomic landscape governing public dairy policy across southern India. With cooperative dairy unions serving both as rural economic lifelines and providers of public nutritional security, commercial decisions carry immediate political sensitivity. Resolving these operational pressures will require cooperative leadership and state authorities to enhance processing plant efficiencies, reduce distribution leakage, and balance producer incentives with transparent, consumer-friendly retail pricing frameworks that protect public trust in the cooperative model.
