National Dairy Development Board joins forces with Suzuki R&D India and Purabi Dairy to construct a landmark compressed biogas plant fueled by agricultural manure.

In a major step toward promoting green energy and sustainable rural frameworks in northeastern India, a landmark Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed to establish a state-of-the-art compressed biogas (CBG) plant in Assam. This tripartite agreement was formalized by the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB), Suzuki R&D Centre India Pvt. Ltd. (SRDI), and North East Dairy and Foods Ltd. (NEDFL), a prominent joint venture between the Government of Assam and the NDDB that commercially markets its regional dairy portfolio under the popular Purabi brand. The high-profile signing ceremony was executed in the presence of Toshihiro Suzuki, President of Suzuki Motor Corporation, and Meenesh Shah, Chairman of the NDDB, alongside key corporate signatories S Rajeev (NDDB), Satya Brata Bose (NEDFL), and Kenichiro Toyofuku (SRDI).

The proposed waste-to-energy infrastructure project marks a transformative milestone in Assam’s shift toward a highly resilient circular economy. By systematically capturing and converting raw regional agricultural and livestock dairy waste, the manufacturing plant will generate compressed biogas, which operates as a clean, renewable alternative to conventional fossil fuels for both automotive transportation and heavy industrial settings. Concurrently, the processing cycle yields a steady stream of high-quality organic fertilizer, enabling the local food system to advance scientific waste management protocols while heavily reducing regional greenhouse gas emissions.

The operational responsibilities under this collaborative framework are distributed strategically among the three primary stakeholders to maximize project efficiency. The NDDB is tasked with providing essential technical and institutional backing, ensuring that the processing facility complies with advanced agricultural engineering standards. Meanwhile, regional processing giant NEDFL will take full charge of physical project execution, day-to-day plant operations, and the downstream commercial marketing and sales of the generated compressed biogas and associated bio-fertilizers. Suzuki R&D India acts as the financial anchor, deploying the necessary capital investment while realizing the direct carbon benefits and credits stemming from the resulting drop in regional carbon emissions.

From a macroeconomic perspective, the joint venture is positioned to function as a powerful socioeconomic engine for the state’s agricultural smallholders. By transforming low-value livestock manure and crop residues into a highly marketable commodity, the processing plant creates a brand-new, reliable source of supplemental income for local dairy producers. Furthermore, the massive output of nutrient-rich organic bio-fertilizers will directly support sustainable agricultural practices and improve native soil health. NDDB Chairman Meenesh Shah emphasized that because Assam and the broader Northeast are globally celebrated for their near-natural, low-input farming models, this circular integration will seamlessly transition the region toward sustainable organic farming while optimizing baseline dairy returns.

This strategic expansion in Northeast India directly aligns with a broader green mobility roadmap spearheaded by international corporate and governmental actors. Representative Director and President Toshihiro Suzuki revealed that the automotive giant is currently heavily involved in nine distinct biogas plant initiatives across India, including two production facilities already fully operational in Banaskantha, Gujarat. By extending this technical clean-energy infrastructure into Assam, the partnership actively advances synchronized environmental efforts between the governments of Japan and India to encourage widespread biogas adoption. Managing Director SB Bose reiterated Purabi’s corporate commitment to transforming this initiative into a landmark milestone toward a cleaner, greener world, showing how the global dairy sector can effectively integrate with heavy manufacturing to deliver sustainable society-wide solutions.
