MP’s alert prompts surprise inspections as authorities test for adulteration amid wider dairy quality concerns in Andhra Pradesh.
Milk safety in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, has been placed under intensified scrutiny after Lok Sabha MP Maddila Gurumoorthy issued a strong warning to district officials about the dangers of adulterated milk and other food products. In a letter to the Tirupati District Collector, the MP stressed that public health must take precedence, urging authorities to respond swiftly to any suspected violations of food-safety standards.
Officials were directed to launch special inspection drives targeting the manufacture, storage, transport and sale of adulterated items across the district. The MP recommended task forces with continuous monitoring and even suggested cancelling licences of traders who repeatedly flout food safety regulations — a significant escalation in regulatory pressure on dairy vendors and related businesses.
To implement these directives, the District Food Safety Officer and teams conducted surprise inspections at multiple cow and buffalo milk sale centres across Tirupati, including around Annarao Circle, Reservoir Road and ISKCON Road. Preliminary field testing using iodine and soybean powder revealed starch contamination in one shop and water dilution in another, triggering the collection of samples for detailed laboratory analysis.
All samples collected from milk sale outlets have been forwarded to the State Food Safety and Anti-Adulteration Laboratory for comprehensive testing. If laboratory results confirm adulteration or harmful quality issues, vendors could face strict penalties under the Food Safety Act, including fines up to ₹5 lakh and possible imprisonment of up to one year — a strong enforcement signal for the local dairy market.
The MP also appealed to consumers to remain vigilant and report suspicious milk quality to the District Food Safety Officer or District Consumer Information Centre. For dairies, processors and supply chain analysts, the Tirupati case highlights the rising regulatory focus and public sensitivity around milk quality, food safety compliance and risk management across India’s regional dairy sectors.
