Statewide food safety operation intensifies after suspected contaminated milk linked to multiple deaths and hospitalisations in Rajamahendravaram.
The Andhra Pradesh government has significantly ramped up surveillance and enforcement of milk quality across the state following a cluster of acute renal failure cases in Rajamahendravaram, East Godavari district that preliminary investigations linked to contaminated milk consumption. Officials confirmed at least five deaths and numerous hospitalisations tied to the incident, triggering an urgent public health response.
In a broad inspection drive, authorities have collected around 150 milk samples from retail, sales and storage points for laboratory analysis in accredited labs in Hyderabad, Chennai and Kakinada, aiming to detect adulteration or contaminants. In some towns like Anantapur, nearly 100 litres of substandard milk were identified and discarded, highlighting systemic risks in milk supply chains. Strict penalties are being signalled for irregular practices, including improper sales and handling.
The crackdown extends beyond basic sampling. State officers deployed advanced quality detection kits to enable immediate field screening of milk sold in loose form and containers, particularly targeting unlicensed vendors and informal dairy outlets. Officials emphasised that enforcement will continue for another week, with special attention on milk purity and safety standards under food safety laws.
Medical teams and food safety experts are also deeply involved. Rapid Response Teams have been constituted to coordinate medical care for victims still in hospital and analyse clinical data alongside food testing to pinpoint causes of kidney complications. While investigations continue, authorities are keeping open channels for broader testing and follow-up action based on laboratory findings.
This crisis underscores the critical importance of milk safety and quality assurance in emerging dairy markets. For international dairy producers and processors, the Andhra situation serves as both a cautionary tale and a reminder of how food-borne risks can rapidly escalate into public health emergencies, demanding rigorous supply chain monitoring and proactive regulatory oversight.
