Administrative secretaries tour Phanday Milk Society to map rural dairy support needs.
Senior administrative leaders from the Cooperative and Rural Development Departments of UT Ladakh visited the Phanday Milk and Dairy Cooperative Society Ltd. in Matho Village, Leh district, to evaluate grassroots dairy operations and engage directly with local producers. The officials’ tour aimed to gain a clear picture of on-the-ground challenges facing the cooperative and its member farmers, signalling government interest in strengthening rural dairy ecosystems.
The delegation was warmly received by the village head and the cooperative’s president, highlighting the community’s readiness to engage with policy makers. In an interactive session, farmers shared detailed concerns relating to dairy farming logistics, fodder availability, cooperative administration and sustainable income generation — key issues for smallholders in the high-altitude, remote context of Ladakh’s dairy sector.
A central theme of the discussions was the importance of policy convergence between cooperative and rural development schemes to ensure that dairy producers can generate stable incomes and access broader support mechanisms. The officials underscored the need for coordinated interventions that align cooperative assistance with rural infrastructure and development planning.
Farmers raised specific operational challenges, including the lack of a dedicated milk transport vehicle — a logistical bottleneck given Matho’s role as a major milk-supplying village. There was also interest in exposure visits to leading dairy operations such as Anand Dairy in Gujarat, reflecting producer aspirations to adopt best practices in dairy management and cooperative functioning.
Officials responded positively to these concerns, with commitments to examine compensation mechanisms, provision of milk vans under the SDP budget, and strengthened breeding support through quality bulls. The visit included representatives from the National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) and cooperative registrars, pointing to a multi-stakeholder approach to bolstering rural dairy capacity in Ladakh.
