Kerala’s TRCMPU opens its Ambalathara plant to the public on November 24-25, offering a rare look at advanced processing and quality protocols.
As part of the annual National Milk Day celebrations, Milma’s Thiruvananthapuram Regional Co-operative Milk Producers’ Union (TRCMPU) is extending a rare opportunity to the public: an open visit to its highly modernized Ambalathara dairy plant. This initiative, scheduled for November 24 and 25, aims to demystify the complex journey of milk from collection to consumption. By opening the doors to consumers, the cooperative seeks to build greater transparency and reinforce public trust in the strict quality protocols that govern large-scale dairy production.
The dairy visit offers a comprehensive, step-by-step view of the entire processing workflow. Visitors, allowed access from 10 am to 5 pm, will witness the intricate steps involved in milk handling, including how raw milk is collected from various local producers’ cooperative units, the critical processes of pasteurization and sterilization, and the high-speed, advanced machinery used for final packaging into sachets for distribution to retail outlets. This demonstration highlights the critical role of technology in ensuring milk safety and logistical efficiency.
Beyond fluid milk processing, the public will also be guided through the manufacturing process of Milma’s diverse portfolio of value-added dairy products. This includes detailed viewing of the production units for commodities like ghee, ice cream, butter, paneer (cheese), and buttermilk. By showcasing the creation of these items, Milma emphasizes its role not just as a milk provider, but as a major manufacturer diversifying the dairy product economy within the state and showcasing advanced processing capabilities.
The overall celebration is centered around November 26, designated as National Milk Day to honor the birth anniversary of the late Dr. Verghese Kurien, the revered “Father of India’s White Revolution.” Milma is also leveraging the celebration as an educational outreach platform. Complementing the plant visits, the cooperative is hosting a painting competition and a quiz on November 20 and 21, respectively, targeting high school and higher secondary students to promote awareness and engagement in the dairy and livestock sectors.
Finally, to further engage the public and provide direct economic value, the Ambalathara dairy will host special counters where visitors can purchase Milma products at discount rates during the two-day open house event. This combines educational outreach with commercial incentive, strengthening the relationship between the major regional dairy cooperative and its consumer base, while underscoring the vital role the dairy supply chain plays in India’s ongoing economic and nutritional security.
