Madhya Pradesh government aims to boost the state’s milk production share from 9% to 20% via massive livestock development and natural farming.
The state government of Madhya Pradesh (MP) has unveiled an ambitious target to transform the region into India’s leading milk-producing state, a significant goal for the national agribusiness sector. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced this commitment, emphasizing that the plan involves a collaborative partnership with society to promote cattle rearing, dairy development, and natural farming. This initiative is directly linked to the broader national objective of doubling farmers’ income, underscoring the vital economic role of animal husbandry within MP’s agrarian economy.
Currently, Madhya Pradesh contributes approximately 9% of India’s milk production. The state government’s new strategy sets a high benchmark, aiming to more than double this contribution to a 20% share of the country’s total milk output. Achieving this scale will require substantial enhancements to both infrastructure and on-farm practices, positioning MP as a major player in India’s expansive milk supply chain and altering the domestic dairy economics landscape.
A key component of this development strategy involves significant support for cow welfare and utilization. The state has doubled its financial assistance to gaushalas (cow shelters) from ₹20 to ₹40 per cow per day. This increased support is intended to ensure the regular availability of cow-based products—milk, dung, and urine—for productive use. The government’s messaging emphasizes the scientific recognition of these products, including their traditional uses for health and environmental benefits, such as the effectiveness of cow dung-plastered homes against radiation.
The push toward natural and organic farming is closely integrated with the dairy expansion strategy. By promoting cow-based agricultural methods, the government is tapping into a global trend, acknowledging that the world is “once again acknowledging the value” of these traditional practices. This focus creates a symbiotic relationship where livestock supports sustainable crop production, and vice versa, offering a value proposition for consumers interested in ethically and naturally sourced dairy and food products.
The Chief Minister’s announcement, made at a state-level Govardhan Puja event, frames the strategy within a cultural context, emphasizing the deep respect for cows (Gauvansh) as the “soul of Sanatan culture.” By linking economic growth and dairy development to environmental protection and cultural harmony, the government aims to create public buy-in for its reform agenda. The effort includes honoring individuals and organizations for their exemplary contributions to Gauvansh welfare, signaling a comprehensive, value-driven approach to livestock management.
