PM Modi Inaugurates New ₹76.5 Cr Milk Powder Facility as Madhya Pradesh Aims to Double National Milk Production Share in Five Years.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated a new milk powder plant in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, underscoring a major governmental commitment to bolstering the nation’s dairy economics and food processing sector. The facility, established at a cost of ₹76.5 crore (approximately $9.2 million USD), was one of several agricultural and animal husbandry projects inaugurated. The Chief Minister of Madhya Pradesh, Mohan Yadav, attended the local event, thanking PM Modi and confirming the unit’s role in supporting the state’s ambitious growth plans for its dairy sector.
The new facility, built under the National Programme for Dairy Development (NPDD) and operating through the Indore Cooperative Milk Union, boasts a significant daily production capability. Officials confirmed the plant has the capacity to produce 30 metric tonnes of milk powder per day. This crucial investment in high-capacity processing infrastructure is directly linked to the state government’s aggressive target to increase its contribution to the national milk supply and improve value realization for its dairy producers.
Madhya Pradesh is setting a clear and ambitious objective for the next five years: to significantly expand its share of India’s overall milk production. Currently, the state contributes approximately 9% to the national milk output. However, CM Yadav announced the administration’s goal is to raise this figure to a substantial 20%. This target requires major investments in technology and capacity, of which the new Indore milk powder plant is a central pillar, facilitating the necessary industrial-scale processing of raw milk.
Beyond infrastructure, the state government is emphasizing policies designed to ensure fair prices for farmers. CM Yadav highlighted the government’s commitment to consistently increasing the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for key commodities like wheat and soybean. In a protective move for soybean growers, the state recently introduced the Bhavantar Bhugtan Yojana (price difference payment scheme). This mechanism guarantees that if traders purchase soybean below the central government’s MSP, the state will directly credit the difference to the farmers’ bank accounts, bolstering their financial security.
The combination of the new milk processing capacity and supportive pricing mechanisms demonstrates a comprehensive strategy to drive agribusiness growth and rural prosperity in Madhya Pradesh. CM Yadav assured farmers that the government is committed to ensuring fair milk prices alongside stable MSPs for crops. This integrated approach, focused on both value-added manufacturing and price protection, is designed to rapidly accelerate the state’s dairy sector and overall contribution to India’s food and beverages industry.
