Gujarat's New Dairy Frontier

The state’s northern region is emerging as a global hub for agribusiness, attracting major investment with a strategic conference.

North Gujarat is rapidly establishing itself as a dominant force in India’s agricultural and dairy sectors, positioning itself as a national agro-dairy powerhouse. This transformation is being officially highlighted at the upcoming Vibrant Gujarat Regional Conference (VGRC) in Mehsana, scheduled for October 9-10. The conference is a key platform to showcase significant investment opportunities across the region’s entire value chain, from cultivation to processing, targeting investors interested in the massive Indian food and dairy economy.

The region’s success is driven by specific districts and their key products. Aravalli, for instance, has gained prominence for its potato-based products like fries and chips, exporting its unique sugar-free potatoes to 12 countries. Banaskantha, the largest potato-producing district in the state, also leads globally in psyllium exports and is home to Banas Dairy, considered Asia’s largest cooperative, which supports over 300,000 farmers and manages a massive dairy infrastructure.

Another major player is Mehsana, which has become a central hub for agri-processing and spices. The Unjha Market Yard in the district is a strategic site that dominates India’s spice trade, particularly for cumin and fennel. This, combined with the presence of Dudhsagar Dairy, which produces and markets a wide range of dairy products like milk, ghee, and cheese, solidifies the region’s reputation as a key player in both the agricultural and dairy industries.

The region’s agricultural prowess is supported by its well-established cooperative movement, with major dairies like Banas Dairy, Dudhsagar Dairy, and Sabar Dairy serving as economic and social pillars. These cooperatives have not only boosted the rural economy but also empowered local communities. Sabar Dairy alone, for example, produces an impressive 3.353 million liters of milk daily, underscoring the sheer scale of the operation.

The upcoming conference, held under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, is designed to attract investments by highlighting the region’s unique strengths, including its strong economic foundation, advanced infrastructure, and global market connections. The event will feature seminars and networking sessions, making a clear case for North Gujarat as a magnet for investors looking to capitalize on India’s burgeoning agro-dairy sector.
