Minister Chouhan Highlights Decade of Growth & Farmer Prosperity.
Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan recently highlighted a significant agricultural boom in India, detailing the government’s comprehensive efforts to boost productivity and diversify farming practices. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, Chouhan emphasized a strategic approach that includes not only staple crops but also fruits, flowers, vegetables, dairy, fish farming, and animal husbandry, aiming for holistic growth in the agribusiness sector.
Chouhan presented compelling data demonstrating a remarkable increase in agricultural output over the past decade. He noted that food grain production soared from 240.42 million tonnes in 2013-14 to 353.96 million tonnes. Similarly, dal production grew from 16.38 million tonnes to 25.24 million tonnes, and tilhan (oilseed) production increased from 27.51 million tonnes to 42.61 million tonnes, showcasing broad-based growth in key agricultural commodities.
Crucially for the dairy industry, the Minister highlighted a substantial surge in milk production, which jumped from 137.7 million tonnes to an impressive 249.30 million tonnes. This significant expansion in dairy output is a testament to the government’s focus on animal husbandry and its positive impact on dairy economics, benefiting countless milk producers across the nation.
Beyond production figures, Chouhan detailed robust financial support mechanisms aimed at empowering farmers. He cited the PM-KISAN scheme, which has benefited 10 crore farmers with Rs 2 lakh crore in subsidies, and a substantial increase in Kisan Credit Card (KCC) funding from Rs 7 lakh crore to Rs 25 lakh crore. Furthermore, the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana settled claims worth Rs 1.43 lakh crore, significantly compensating for crop losses.
The Minister also underscored enhanced Minimum Support Price (MSP) policies, ensuring farmers a 50% profit over production costs, a policy previously rejected. Coupled with substantial subsidies on urea and DAP, these measures have collectively worked to reduce input costs and ensure better prices for agricultural produce, directly boosting farmer incomes and fostering a more stable and prosperous agri-food sector in India.
