Despite repeated complaints to the MCG, a stray cattle menace continues to go unchecked in Sector 23A. Residents noted that the problem is further exacerbated by the presence of illegal dairies nearby, as dairy owners leave their cattle to roam freely on the roads – leading to traffic snarls and increasing accident risk.
According to residents, MCG teams have previously conducted drives to remove the stray cattle, but these dairy owners seem to be alerted beforehand, allowing them to temporarily hide their cattle.
Bhawani Shankar Tripathy, general secretary of the Sector 23A RWA, said that the issue has worsened to a serious safety hazard.
“Recently, a woman was severely injured after being attacked by a stray cow. What is shocking is how the cattle disappear just before the MCG van arrives to catch them. And as soon as the MCG team leaves, the cattle return to the roads. How does that happen? It clearly indicates that someone is tipping off the cattle owners in advance,” Tripathy added.
The presence of stray cattle has also led to unsanitary conditions in the area. People tend to leave leftover food at every nook and corner, causing rodent infestation and a messy surrounding, residents said.
“There have been numerous complaints, but no results. It’s high time the authorities take this issue seriously before a major mishap occurs. Traffic flow is frequently obstructed and the unhygienic conditions have further deteriorated the quality of life in the sector,” Sachiin Gandotra, a resident, said.
Meanwhile, MCG chief medical officer (CMO) Dr Ashish Singla said that the municipal corporation has carried out multiple drives to catch the stray cattle in the sector and relocate them to shelters. “However, we have now asked the enforcement team to take action against the dairy operating in the area,” the CMO added.
