The Malabar Regional Cooperative Milk Producers Union (MRCMPU), part of the Kerala Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (Milma), is all set to inaugurate Kerala’s first milk powder production facility in Moorkkanadu, Malappuram, on December 24. The plant, built at a cost of Rs 131.03 crore, marks a major advancement for the State’s dairy sector.

Addressing dependency on other states

Currently, Kerala lacks an in-state milk powder production facility, forcing Milma to depend on plants in other states during surplus production periods, including the COVID-19 lockdowns. This new facility aims to end such dependencies, offering a secure market for milk produced by Kerala’s dairy farmers. Additionally, it is expected to generate substantial tax revenue for the State government and create direct and indirect job opportunities.

Advanced technology for efficiency

With a production capacity of 10 metric tonnes of milk powder per day, the plant features advanced Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCDA) systems for real-time monitoring and analysis of the production process. Employing spray-drying technology, this unit is the first in Kerala to integrate SCDA-enabled systems. Financial backing from the Kerala government and the Swiss Development Cooperation facilitated its completion.

Boosting Kerala’s dairy industry

The launch of this facility aligns with Malabar Milma’s impressive growth in recent years. Over the last five years, its turnover rose by 48%, with Rs 5,091.7 crore disbursed to dairy farmers through milk cooperative societies. Milk sales in the region increased by 27.89% during this period, alongside rising revenues from value-added dairy products.

The new plant is expected to bolster Kerala’s dairy industry, ensuring greater stability for farmers while reducing reliance on external processing facilities.
