The dairy cooperatives in the region will assign an individual for milking cows. Mechanised mobile milking units and a two-wheeler will be distributed to such individuals. Monthly milking charge is Rs 1,000. In that Rs 750 need to be borne by the dairy farmer, while Rs 250 will be paid by the cooperative.

The funds of local bodies and Department of Dairy Development will be utilized for the project. It will be spearheaded by joint liability groups of dairy farmers that will be formed under an organized programme aimed at improving production and marketing of dairy milk, commercial-level production of fodder and other allied activities. Each joint liability group will have 4 to 10 members.

Interestingly, the mobile milking unit project was started in Alappuzha to resolve the shortage of milkers in the region. They are operating in Bharanikavu, Cherthala and Aryad. The fund was allocated from annual project of block panchayat. The project costing Rs 1.30 lakh was provided to the co-operatives by giving 75 per cent subsidy.
