Artisanal producers gain international recognition with top honors at a major global cheese competition.

Narendra Modi has congratulated Indian cheesemakers following a strong debut at the Mundial do Queijo do Brasil 2026, an international competition for cheese and dairy products. The recognition marks a significant milestone for India’s emerging artisanal dairy segment on the global stage.

India Dairy Shifts to High-Protein, High-Margin Products

Indian entries secured four medals in total, including one Super Gold, two Golds, and one Silver. The Super Gold was awarded to Eleftheria Gulmarg (Brie-style), while Gold medals went to Yak Churpi-Soft from Nordic Farm in Leh, Ladakh, and Eleftheria Brunost (whey cheese). A Silver medal was earned by Eleftheria Kaali Miri (Belper Knolle-style).

The Prime Minister highlighted the achievements of producers Mausam Narang and Thenlay Nurboo, emphasizing the role of innovation and craftsmanship in elevating India’s dairy products internationally. These awards reflect growing expertise in specialty and value-added dairy production.

The success signals increasing global recognition for Indian artisanal cheeses, a segment that has traditionally been underrepresented in international competitions. It also underscores the diversification of India’s dairy industry beyond large-scale milk production into premium, niche products.

For the global dairy sector, the results point to new competitive players emerging in specialty cheese markets. India’s performance at the event highlights the potential for artisanal dairy products from non-traditional regions to gain traction in international markets.
