Experts at the SKUAST-K national conclave reveal that milk, meat, and eggs will drive the next wave of major economic growth in Jammu and Kashmir.
Animal Agriculture to Drive J&K Economic Boom
‘Veterinarians custodians of public health; students should be job creators, not seekers’

Top experts at the SKUAST-K National Conclave name milk, meat, and poultry as the vital engines for the region’s next macro-economic growth phase.

The Sher-e-Kashmir University of Agricultural Sciences and Technology of Kashmir (SKUAST-K) has successfully inaugurated a two-day national conclave focused on the future of livestock production. Titled “Next-Gen Technologies for Sustainable Livestock Production: Pathways for Prosperity,” the high-level event is organized by the university’s Division of Livestock Production Management. The gathering has brought together prominent animal scientists, policy planners, industrial leaders, and progressive farmers from across the nation to map out new commercial pathways.

During the opening sessions, leading economists and agricultural experts emphasized that animal husbandry is uniquely positioned to drive the next massive wave of economic development in Jammu and Kashmir. Livestock farming currently contributes a vital 25-28% to the agricultural gross domestic product (Agri-GDP) of the region. Speakers noted that because a vast majority of the rural population directly depends on this sector for their daily livelihood, empowering it is essential for regional stability.

Specialists highlighted that the rising consumer demand for high-value proteins, specifically milk, meat, and eggs, presents an unprecedented commercial opportunity for local primary producers. To fully capture this expanding market, the conclave focused heavily on the immediate integration of next-generation management technologies. By shifting from traditional subsistence farming to precision livestock practices, the regional supply chain can significantly increase structural output and quality standards.

The academic and political leadership present at the event reiterated their commitment to establishing robust support frameworks for small and medium agribusinesses. Key discussions centered on improving veterinary healthcare delivery, expanding high-quality fodder production, and implementing advanced genetic selection tools to optimize animal performance. Strengthening these foundational inputs is seen as a critical prerequisite for building an export-capable livestock economy.

Ultimately, the national symposium aims to generate a comprehensive actionable policy roadmap that aligns academic research with real-world industrial needs. By fostering closer collaboration between regional universities, government agencies, and corporate manufacturing stakeholders, the initiative seeks to accelerate technology transfer directly to the field. Transforming Jammu and Kashmir into a highly productive agricultural hub will drastically reduce its current reliance on outside imports.
