India’s largest dairy cooperative raises retail milk prices by ₹2 per litre, citing higher production and procurement expenses.
Amul has increased milk prices by ₹2 per litre across India effective May 14, marking another significant adjustment in the country’s dairy market amid mounting cost pressures. The price revision applies to major liquid milk categories and reflects rising expenses throughout the dairy supply chain.
The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), which markets products under the Amul brand, said the increase was necessary due to higher input and procurement costs. According to the cooperative, farmers have been facing elevated feed, transportation and operational expenses, pushing processors to recalibrate retail pricing.
The company noted that the latest increase represents only a modest percentage rise in maximum retail prices compared to overall inflation in production costs. Amul emphasized that a large share of the additional revenue generated from the price revision would flow directly back to milk producers, reinforcing farmer sustainability.
India’s dairy sector has experienced tightening milk availability in recent seasons due to weather fluctuations, increasing cattle feed prices and strong domestic demand. Industry analysts say procurement competition among cooperatives and private processors has intensified, especially in key milk-producing regions.
The latest move by Amul follows similar price revisions by other dairy companies and signals broader inflationary trends in the Indian dairy economy. Market participants expect milk prices, procurement dynamics and farmgate margins to remain closely watched as processors balance consumer affordability with producer profitability through 2026.
