Aavin Relaunches Automated 'Button Paal' Vending in Nilgiris to Cut Single-Use Plastic

In a targeted environmental and operational initiative aimed at curbing single-use plastic waste across the ecologically fragile Western Ghats, Tamil Nadu state dairy cooperative Aavin has officially relaunched its automated milk vending machine (AVM) service—traditionally known as “button paal”—in the Nilgiris district. Inaugurated by Nilgiris District Collector Lakshmi Bhavya Tanneeru near the Uzhavar Sandhai (farmers’ market) in Ooty, the pilot deployment allows local residents and tourists to purchase fresh milk directly into reusable containers, stainless steel cans, or tumblers, eliminating the need for conventional low-density polyethylene (LDPE) packaging sachets.

The modern AVM installation features a 200-litre insulated storage tank equipped with internal active chilling systems maintaining a continuous temperature of 4°C to preserve milk freshness and uphold cold-chain integrity. The automated unit is integrated with cashless digital payment options—including Unified Payments Interface (UPI) QR codes, ATM debit cards, and cash acceptors—which instantly calculate and dispense the precise liquid volume corresponding to the customer’s payment. Currently dispensing a single milk variety priced at ₹54 per litre, the platform includes software telemetry that monitors inventory volumes and storage duration in real time to prevent stockouts and manage replenishment schedules.

The deployment represents the modernization of an operational model with deep historical roots in Tamil Nadu’s dairy retail network. The original mechanical “button paal” dispensing booths were widely utilized across urban centers for decades before being phased out around 2014 following persistent operational challenges, including calibration drift, sanitation hurdles, and consumer complaints regarding unauthorized water addition during field transport. By incorporating tamper-evident digital metering, automated sanitation protocols, and centralized digital monitoring, the new units aim to eliminate historical quality vulnerabilities.

From a sustainability perspective, the project aligns directly with stringent district-level environmental mandates designed to reduce non-biodegradable waste in high-altitude tourist zones. With millions of single-use milk sachets entering municipal waste streams across hill stations annually, bulk dispensing provides a closed-loop alternative that reduces plastic production, lowers packaging material overhead for the cooperative, and encourages consumer-led container reuse. Local authorities confirmed that additional AVM units will be installed across Ooty, Coonoor, and Kotagiri following initial consumer adoption assessments.

The Nilgiris rollout illustrates how Indian state dairy cooperatives are deploying smart retail hardware to solve environmental compliance challenges while modernizing consumer touchpoints. If successfully scaled, containerized automated milk dispensing offers a cost-effective, low-carbon distribution channel that reduces cooperative packaging expenditure and supports regional plastic-free directives. Combining real-time digital monitoring with local farmer supply chains will remain central to determining whether automated vending can be permanently reintegrated across wider municipal dairy networks.
