Erode-based dairy major scales value-added processing capacity to meet booming regional demand for cultured dairy.

Leading South Indian dairy processor Milky Mist Dairy Foods has formally commissioned a dedicated, high-capacity yogurt manufacturing facility at its integrated mega-processing campus in Perundurai, Erode district, Tamil Nadu. As reported by FnB News, the strategic capacity addition is designed to expand the company’s manufacturing footprint across premium fermented dairy lines, meeting surging consumer demand for packaged, high-protein cultured dairy across urban southern and pan-Indian retail networks.

The new facility features automated processing and packaging lines, incorporating advanced European fermentation technology, inline fruit preparation systems, and high-speed aseptic filling equipment. By minimizing human contact across the manufacturing sequence, the plant ensures strict microbiological safety and consistent texture, firmness, and flavor profiles across extended shelf lives. The plant’s processing architecture accommodates diverse cultured formats, ranging from traditional set curd and flavored stirred yogurts to thick Greek yogurts and drinkable probiotic yogurt beverages.

The commissioning aligns directly with Milky Mist’s long-standing strategy of prioritizing value-added dairy products (VADP) over commodity liquid milk distribution. While raw liquid milk retail operates on razor-thin operating margins vulnerable to procurement cost swings, cultured dairy lines—particularly Greek yogurt, fruit yogurts, and functional probiotic blends—command premium retail price points and significantly higher gross margins. Sourcing directly from thousands of dairy farmers across western Tamil Nadu, the enterprise channels high-quality milk solids directly into high-margin consumer packaged goods.

Beyond processing efficiency, the new installation integrates automated clean-in-place (CIP) sanitation systems, low-energy refrigeration lines, and wastewater recovery loops that link with the campus’s zero-liquid-discharge (ZLD) effluent treatment infrastructure. The expansion reinforces Milky Mist’s integrated supply model, allowing the company to leverage its extensive owned cold-chain logistics network—comprising hundreds of refrigerated transport vehicles—to supply modern trade hypermarkets, quick-commerce dark stores, and traditional retail chillers without temperature breaks.

Milky Mist’s latest processing milestone reflects broader structural growth across India’s organized fermented dairy category. Driven by increasing consumer awareness of gut microbiome health, post-workout protein supplementation, and urban dietary shifts toward convenient snacking, premium cultured dairy is experiencing double-digit compound annual growth. By commissioning specialized, automated processing infrastructure, Milky Mist strengthens its competitive positioning against multinational dairy corporations and domestic cooperative giants, cementing its status as an innovation leader in India’s value-added dairy market.
