India’s Milk Giants Raise Prices Amid Cost Surge
Amul and Mother Dairy have raised milk prices across several variants, including full cream and buffalo milk, effective May 14.

Amul and Mother Dairy increase retail milk prices nationwide as procurement, feed and logistics costs continue rising.

India’s leading dairy brands, Amul and Mother Dairy, have announced fresh milk price increases effective May 14, raising rates across multiple key product categories. The revisions apply to full cream, toned, cow, buffalo and premium milk variants sold in several major markets, reflecting mounting pressure across the dairy supply chain.

Amul, operated by the Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF), increased prices by ₹1-2 per litre depending on the variant. Amul Gold milk in the one-litre pack rose to ₹70 from ₹68, while Amul Taaza increased to ₹57 per litre from ₹55. The cooperative also revised prices for buffalo milk, cow milk, Slim & Trim and Tea Special products.

Mother Dairy implemented similar revisions across various stock-keeping units, according to a company circular issued to distributors and transporters. Buffalo milk recorded one of the sharpest increases, while full cream milk, double-toned milk, toned milk, cow milk and Pro Milk variants also moved higher. The revised pricing structure applies to milk supplied from the night of May 13 and available to consumers from the morning of May 14.

Both dairy processors pointed to rising procurement and operational costs as the main drivers behind the latest price adjustments. India’s dairy industry has faced sustained inflation in cattle feed, transportation, packaging and milk collection expenses over recent years, leading both cooperatives and private players to revise retail prices in phases since 2022.

The latest increases underscore the fragile balance between maintaining affordable dairy products for consumers and ensuring sustainable returns for milk producers. As the world’s largest milk-producing nation, India remains highly sensitive to changes in procurement conditions, seasonal milk supply and dairy input costs, all of which continue shaping retail pricing strategies across the sector.
