Madhya Pradesh targets “Milk Capital” status with dairy investment, fair pricing, and rising milk production to boost rural incomes.
Madhya Pradesh Pushes to Become India’s Milk Hub

Government ramps up dairy investment, farmer support, and milk procurement to boost production and rural incomes.

Madhya Pradesh is positioning itself as India’s future “Milk Capital,” with Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav outlining an ambitious strategy to expand dairy production and strengthen rural livelihoods. Speaking at a state-level livestock and dairy summit in Gwalior, he emphasized the sector’s role as a cornerstone of the rural economy and a pathway to economic self-reliance for farmers.

The government is advancing a mission-driven approach to increase milk output, combining investment, innovation, and stakeholder participation. Central to this plan is a commitment to procure all milk produced—both cow and buffalo—and ensure fair pricing for livestock farmers, alongside broader efforts to enhance income stability across the dairy value chain.

A series of infrastructure and animal health initiatives were announced, including a new Animal Wellness Centre in Gwalior, upgrades to existing veterinary services, and a new hospital in Dabra. These measures aim to improve livestock productivity and welfare, supported by expanded subsidies such as increased feed assistance and financial incentives for establishing cowsheds.

The state is also promoting integrated rural development through programs like the “Vrindavan Gram” initiative in every block, as well as collaboration with the National Dairy Development Board to scale milk collection. Daily procurement has already risen significantly, with ambitious targets to further expand volumes while improving breed quality and farm practices.

With more than 5 lakh cattle managed in growing networks of gaushalas and increasing adoption of technology-driven practices, Madhya Pradesh is seeking to transform its dairy sector into a major growth engine. The strategy reflects a broader push to align dairy expansion with employment generation, sustainability, and long-term agricultural competitiveness.
