Milk production in India’s most populous state has surged 40%, driven by women-led dairy growth and stronger rural infrastructure.

Uttar Pradesh has emerged as India’s leading milk-producing state after increasing milk output by nearly 40% over the past eight years. State production rose from 277 lakh metric tonnes in 2016-17 to more than 388 lakh metric tonnes in 2024-25, allowing Uttar Pradesh to overtake major dairy-producing regions such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. The state now accounts for around 16% of India’s total milk production.

The rapid expansion reflects growing investment in dairy infrastructure and animal husbandry across the state. Officials say the dairy sector has become one of the strongest pillars of Uttar Pradesh’s rural economy, helping position the state as the country’s largest dairy producer. Uttar Pradesh is one of five states that together generate 54% of India’s total milk output, but it remains by far the largest contributor within that group.

Women dairy farmers have played a central role in the sector’s growth. Through the Uttar Pradesh State Rural Livelihood Mission, women’s groups in 31 districts are collectively procuring nearly 1 million litres of milk every day. These dairy operations have generated business worth about ₹5,000 crore and connected roughly 400,000 women farmers with five major dairy companies operating across the state.

The women-led dairy network stretches across several regions, including Bundelkhand, Purvanchal, Awadh, Gorakhpur and the Terai belt. Dairy companies such as Balini MPCL, Kashi MPCL, Samarthya MPCL, Shri Baba Gorakhnath Kripa MPCL and Srijan MPCL are helping integrate small producers into formal milk supply chains and expand the state’s dairy processing capacity. Officials say the initiative has strengthened both household incomes and rural employment.

State authorities argue that the growth in milk production is not only an agricultural success story, but also a sign of broader economic transformation in Uttar Pradesh. With continued investment in dairy infrastructure, farmer support programs and women-led cooperatives, the state is positioning itself to play an even larger role in India’s dairy market and export potential in the years ahead.
