Assam’s leading dairy brand enters Barak Valley with a new milk processing facility to boost regional supply and farmer incomes.

Purabi Dairy has strengthened its presence in India’s northeastern dairy sector with the launch of a new milk processing plant in Silchar, marking its entry into the Barak Valley region. The facility is expected to enhance the processing and distribution of fresh milk and dairy products while expanding the cooperative’s footprint beyond its traditional markets. The move reflects broader efforts to develop the dairy value chain and increase milk availability in underserved areas.

The new plant aims to support local dairy farmers by creating stronger procurement networks and improving milk collection systems. By integrating farmers from the surrounding districts into Purabi’s supply chain, the initiative is designed to provide stable market access and improve income opportunities for smallholder producers. Strengthening farm-to-plant logistics will also help ensure a steady supply of raw milk for processing.

Purabi Dairy, operated under the West Assam Milk Producers’ Cooperative Union, continues to play a key role in the region’s dairy development. The expansion into Barak Valley is part of a larger strategy to scale up processing capacity, modernize infrastructure and boost the production of packaged milk and value-added dairy products for regional consumers.

The Silchar plant is expected to improve the availability of safe and processed milk products in the Barak Valley, where demand for packaged dairy is growing. Enhanced local processing will reduce reliance on milk transported from distant regions while strengthening the resilience of the regional dairy supply chain.

Industry observers say the project highlights the ongoing modernization of India’s dairy sector, particularly in emerging production zones. By linking more farmers to organized milk procurement and expanding regional processing capacity, the new facility could contribute to stronger dairy market integration and long-term growth in the northeastern dairy economy.
