Uttarakhand food safety teams seize fake dairy and toughen enforcement ahead of festive demand.
Authorities in Mussoorie and the wider Dehradun region have intensified a crackdown on food adulteration, with a sharp focus on dairy and milk-derived products amid festive-season market pressures. State Food Safety and Drug Administration (FDA) teams, under directives to protect public health, are ramping up inspections to intercept substandard and counterfeit dairy items sold across markets, including paneer, khoya, sweets and oils.
The intensified enforcement campaign — part of broader state-wide actions in Uttarakhand — is led by senior FDA officials who have instructed mobile testing labs to conduct on-the-spot quality checks and collect samples for laboratory analysis. Officials are emphasizing vigilance in border districts to block the influx of adulterated goods brought in from other states.
In a recent operation, a joint team intercepted a vehicle distributing uncertified paneer without FSSAI markings or quality approvals, resulting in seizure and legal action under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. This incident illustrates ongoing efforts to track and disrupt networks supplying unverified dairy products that pose health risks to consumers.
Similar raids in Rishikesh uncovered cream, ghee and skimmed milk powder transported without proper documentation, prompting sample collection and testing. Officials suggest much of this dairy could have been transported from outside the state, underscoring the challenge of policing cross-border adulteration and the need for coordinated enforcement to maintain dairy integrity.
Beyond enforcement activities, state authorities are also urging consumers to carefully check labelling, packaging and manufacturing details — especially during periods of heightened demand — to avoid unsafe products. For dairy producers, exporters and analysts, the Mussoorie crackdown highlights emerging regulatory pressure points and the importance of robust supply-chain quality assurance in both domestic and export sectors.
